North Sulawesi: Indonesia's Most Underrated Destination

Step beyond the well trodden destinations of Bali, Lombok, or the Gili Islands, and consider venturing to North Sulawesi for your next Indonesian adventure.

First of all there is a direct flight from Singapore to Manado, the main airport for North Sulawesi, which puts you at the gateway to a destination that sits between the Coral Triangle and volcanic highlands, combining world-class diving, extraordinary wildlife, and living cultural traditions in a way that feels genuinely off the beaten path. I have been looking into this region closely, and it is now high up on my bucket list.

Crystal clear waters of Indonesia

Why North Sulawesi is Different

There are three distinct zones, each with its own character, that combine into a journey that's hard to replicate anywhere else in Southeast Asia.

- 8 active volcanoes shape the landscape.

- Home to one of the world's great dive sites.

- Exciting rainforest reserves.

- Minahasan culture is one of the least visited in Indonesia.

The rare and elusive Tarsier

Tomohon: The Volcanic Highlands

Start in Tomohon, a highland city set beneath the twin peaks of Mt Lokon and Mt Mahawu. The altitude makes it cooler than the coast and the landscape is dramatically different from anywhere else in Indonesia, with flower farms, volcanic lakes, rice paddies, and jungle hot springs.

I can arrange a guide to take you on a hike to Mt Mahawu's crater at sunrise for views across Manado to Bunaken on a clear morning, and one of those moments that makes the early alarm worthwhile.

Tangkoko: One of Southeast Asia's Finest Wildlife Experiences

Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve is the reason serious wildlife travellers come to North Sulawesi. The spectral tarsier alone is worth the trip, this palm-sized primate hunts at night, can rotate its head nearly 180 degrees, and genuinely looks like nothing else on earth.

I can arrange guided walks through the forests at dawn, dusk, and after dark. Beyond the tarsiers, the reserve is home to crested black macaques (found nowhere else in the world), maleo birds, and an array of endemic species that reward patient observation.

The walks are suitable for families with children aged 8 and above, and the guides are essential, as you won't find these animals without them.

Bunaken & the Islands: Diving the Wall

Bunaken National Park's reef walls are among the most celebrated diving sites in the world. Vertical drop-offs covered in hard and soft corals begin just metres from shore, and at several properties you can snorkel directly from the beach without getting on a boat.

The walls support dense populations of reef fish, turtles, and occasional Napoleon wrasse. For divers this is a bucket-list site. For snorkellers it's accessible in a way that many of Indonesia's best reefs are not.

The island options of Bunaken, Siladen, and Bangka each have their own character. Two to three nights here rounds out the trip perfectly. These islands are a destination in their own right, or paired with the other areas.

Amazing diving in North Sulawesi

Extending to Toraja

North Sulawesi combines naturally with a 3-4 night extension to Toraja in South Sulawesi, a highland culture famous for its extraordinary funeral ceremonies, cliff-carved graves, and traditional tongkonan architecture. Together they make one of the most distinctive Indonesia itineraries available, covering diving, wildlife, and culture in a single trip.

Practical Notes

Getting there: Direct flights from Singapore to Manado (Sam Ratulangi Airport). Flight time is approximately two and a half hours.

How long: A well-structured trip can vary from a long weekend to a week. Add Toraja for a 10-11 night itinerary.

Best time to go: North Sulawesi is a year-round destination. Diving conditions are best May to October.

Families: Tangkoko walks are suitable for children aged 8 and above. The highland and island zones are accessible for most ages.

Who it suits: Wildlife enthusiasts, divers, families looking for something beyond the standard Indonesia circuit, and anyone who wants to feel like they've genuinely gone somewhere different.

North Sulawesi is one of those destinations that rewards proper planning, and the right guides make the difference between a good trip and an extraordinary one.
